To err is human.
But what if that small err costs you too much?
Will you tolerate? Ok, you won’t.
If you want to start affiliate marketing, and can’t earn for the small mistakes, will you stay inactive?
Now let me tell you a situation that is very common when people try their hands on affiliate marketing.
Suppose you invested in making a good affiliate site, created few good contents and started doing affiliate marketing. Somehow; Even after several months, you find there is no ROI.
Yes, this situation happened to many of my friends and they keep on calling me being demotivated about their initial failure.
I know, it’s heartbreaking. But, I am not demotivating you. I want to make you aware of the common mistakes that most affiliate marketers do and end up nowhere.
What I want to tell you is to keep yourself away from the common mistakes that may cost you dearly and that may end up all your enthusiasm for working on affiliate marketing.
Okay, now let’s come to the point.
There are several common affiliate marketing mistakes that I found many marketers doing and approaching me for help being frustrated.
But I believe, “Prevention is better than cure.”
So, why don’t you learn about the common mistakes beforehand that most affiliate marketers do and you gain experience from their failure?
Ok, let’s check out the 17 common mistakes that most affiliate marketers do, but no pro will ever tell you.
Mistake #1: You can't buy Success overnight from the nearby Supermarket
Have you ever heard someone getting success overnight? No, it's not possible. Even the greatest business persons didn't even succeed overnight.
Passion, patience, and perseverance- these 3 P's are the mantra for success in any business.
If you follow these 3 P's, then nobody on this earth can snatch away from you the ladder to your goal and success. I have seen many marketers in my life who lose patience within a short time. But it is like dying before death. Keep your cool, work hard, have patience and see how the mercury reading of your success-meter increases gradually.
Mistake #2: Don't Forget to Track your Traffic Source
Tracking a traffic source is another key to get success in affiliate marketing. By tracking your traffic, you can even get more customers and get more of them converted.
Let me tell you how;
Suppose you used the keyword “beauty tips,” but maybe the PPC value of the keyword “beauty tips for teenagers” is much higher. So, you need to track properly to understand which keyword may bring more traffic to your site.
Similarly, may be you are targeting 20-30 age group of men on your site. But somehow, more men from the age group of 28-33 are getting converted. So if you can track properly, then you can narrow down your age range and get higher ROI.
Mistake #3: Ignoring the Importance of Email List
You won’t believe that 90% of the affiliate marketers fail to get success just because they don’t know or rather ignore the importance of maintaining a list of emails from the very first day of doing the affiliate marketing business. If you have a list of emails, you can send them emails again and again and out of which you may get a group of dedicated returning customers. By this way, you can efficiently and effectively promote your product to many customers.
Many marketers think that it’s a good practice to build an email list after 4-6 months once you start getting traffic. But I strongly oppose this, as Collecting email ids from the first day helped me to grow my business to a huge extent.
Mistake #4: Thinking That Content Quality Doesn't Matter
This is the biggest mistake that many affiliate marketers do. In the offline marketing process, you can contact your customers and convince them on how good any product is. But when you are doing affiliate marketing, it is your content that will create an impression on the customers.
Get a fine quality content written on your website describing your product, and trust me, your work is half done. Now if you think that you are not a pro in writing, then I will suggest you take the help of professional writers. Because your content is one of the main USPs of your marketing tactics.
Make sure there is no spun, or plagiarized content in your site. If there is such content, then the search engines will definitely spam your site, and you will end up losing.
With a good content, you can scale up your business to the next level and who knows one day you can build your own empire from it!
Mistake #5: No!
I don't Need a Website
If you think that having an affiliate link and a social media page is enough to promote your products, then you are mistaken. You need a complete website with good content, that will help your customers to read about your recommendations and be loyal to your products before purchasing.
I am not asking you to hire a designer and developer to make your website and spend huge on it. But, you should try the different free themes and templates that are available online. Once you scale up your business, then you can obviously spend some bucks to create a better website, isn't it?
But to start with, you need at least one basic level website.
The best part is, your website is your property. And when your website has some authority, you can easily sell your website and earn hefty from it.
Doesn’t it sound a cool idea to earn some more money?
Mistake #6: Keyword Research, I don't Think it's Important
If you think so, then it will be your biggest mistake while doing affiliate marketing program.
Keywords are like the landmark of your address.
Now tell me, however good your house may be, but will anybody be able to find it if you don’t give a proper address along with a perfect landmark?
If your website is your address, then the keyword is the landmark. So, people can reach you easily if you use a proper and popular landmark to reach your address.
Low competition keywords with high search volume are the best keywords to target. And of course, I will suggest you use long tail keywords as this can draw more visitors. If you don’t search worthy keywords, then however good your content quality is you can't rank on top pages in the search engines. And you already know, that if you don’t rank in top pages, you literally don’t exist for millions of potential customers.
Mistake #7: I Promote as many Products that I want
I will give you one metaphor.
Suppose you see a salesperson one-day selling dresses in your locality. The next day you see him selling books, after that selling toys and so on.
Tell me, will you trust the salesman?
If a salesperson is not confident with his product and keeps on selling new products each day, then he can't be a trustworthy salesperson for anyone.
Same is with Affiliate marketing.
Don’t try to sell too many products at a time. Start one at a time. Get a good volume of loyal customers, earn trust from them and gotcha, you rock in your business.
Mistake #8: Day Parting not Required for Me
Yeah, who says so?
Do you know that the conversion rate varies throughout the day depending upon your product/service?
Suppose your service is related to dating. So when do you expect your customers?
Of course, it will be during the evening and night when someone will come from the office or job and feel lonely having no partner. So, this is the time when your readers will visit you site, search for services and get converted.
Similarly, if you have some work from home offer, then who do you expect and when do you expect?
Yes, it will be the morning and noon, when people who go to the office get an absolute grudge against their office and Boss and want to quit the job. So, this is the time to get sales in your business.
So, I must say, day parting is very important to save your money and increase your business sales by as minimum as 30%. You can differentiate between the conversion and non-conversion hours.
Mistake #9: I want Free Traffic
Tell me one thing.
Would you offer anything free of cost to any unknown person?
If you won’t, then why do you expect from others?
Trust me; nothing comes for free in this world. Not even free traffic.
If you think you will write the content, you will do the SEO; you will do every work of your marketing strategies, then you would end up earning as less as $3 per hour.
Do you think it's worthy?
See, time is money, so you should save your time by dividing the work and look for some paid traffic. By proper SEO you can get 10,000 visitors per day that too after six months or more. But with paid traffic, you can get that traffic may be in a week or so and that too a good and convertible traffic.
Do some small experiments, spend little at times and seeing the result you can invest more. But if you have no money, then you can try for free traffic, no other way to start with.
Mistake #10: Promoting the Wrong Offer!!
Promoting a wrong offer can do a disaster to your affiliate business. A winning offer can make you win in this field and similarly a bad offer can compel you to end up your attempt being disheartened.
Mistake #11: Not Doing Split Testing
Now, this is a very technical term, and you may be unaware of this if you have not started yet. But let me make you understand this point with a small example.
Suppose you make two landing pages. While promoting one page, you target the audience of the age group from 20-30. And in another landing page, you target 25-35 age group.
After you keep on promoting them, you can identify that which age group of people is converting more and giving you a good ROI. Seeing the results, you can continue promoting one page with good conversion rate and discard the other. This is what split testing is, and you will lose money unnecessarily if you don’t try this.
Mistake #12: I'm Enough Alone, I don't need any Networking with Others
No, if you are thinking so, you are wrong. If you want to earn $$$ from your affiliate program, then networking with other marketers is a must. If you think you can do well even without networking, then trust me, you are not going to be able to make your dream empire. You need to spend time with other marketers, share and discuss new ideas, help each other.
The hidden secrets that the big marketers are following to earn $$ will not be described in their e-books. Only networking, making them friends, discussing with them and visiting affiliate summits can be the fruitful way to have a good start and continue the goodness.
Yes, you need to spend on tickets for these summits, hotel rent, flight fare, but once you get a good network, you will gradually become a pro, and the spending will be worthy.
Mistake #13: I don't Need an
Your affiliate manager is the person who can make your business reach to the summit. He can tell you if you need to go for Adwords or PPC or what else is working for others. They may guide you in putting you in non-rotating landing pages, you get access to creatives through them, you find conversion cookies, and this list simply goes on.
So add your Affiliate Manager in your personal messages, keep a warm relation with him/her and see the castle of your empire growing gradually.
Mistake #14: I won't use the Product, But I will Promote it!
You are again mistaken. How would you review a product or service if you don’t use it? How would you know that what you are promoting has mainly got pros or cons if you don’t use it?
Don’t be a blind man describing an elephant.
If you personally use it, then you can describe it in a much better and trustworthy way. The more trustworthy review and descriptions you use for your product, the readers are more convinced and start trusting your product/service. As the readers start trusting you, you get a good reader base who will gradually convert into your loyal customers.
Mistake #15: I want to Start my Affiliate Sites!
Have you heard that “Too many cooks spoil the broth?”
Yes, this is true for affiliate marketing also. You may think that promoting too many products can increase your sales. But the truth is while promoting too many products; you are simply wasting your time and money rather than building a brand. So it's always better to focus on only 1-2 or maximum three affiliate sites to increase your sales.
Mistake #16: I can Promote any Product, even the poor ones!!
Do you really believe in this? Then this is one of the biggest mistakes that you are either doing or about to do. Would you buy products from a seller who sold you a very poor quality product previously? Would you trust him ever?
This is a grassroots level truth for any business. If you promote poor products, then people may visit your website, but won't buy anything. On the other hand, if somehow they are convinced and buy the poor quality product, then say sure, that you are going to lose that customer forever.
So, be honest about what you sell. Your honesty is the key to success in any affiliate marketing business.
Through honest reviews of good products, you can retain your customers and increase the list of customers gradually sooner or later.
Mistake #17: Branding of my Product is Not Required
Suppose you are selling product “A.” You know well that thousands of other marketers are also selling product “A.” All are using the similar reviews and similar images.
Then why should a customer buy the product from your site and why not from others?
For differentiating your site from others, you need to create some unique selling points that will attract customers. Bonuses work well in this case.
Also, you need to do some brainstorming to find out the ways to make your brand different from others. It's your creativity and your passion for the work that will help you in finding out several unique and out of the basket offers.
Now that I have shared almost all the mistakes that most affiliate marketers do, you can have a look at them and try to avoid these to get a higher ROI.
Lastly, I would say, success can’t be yours overnight.
Listen to the Pro’s!
Keep yourself in a “Do or Die” situation and stay motivated and determined so that nobody on this earth can demotivate you or stop you from reaching to the summit and creating your empire.
Hard work pays.
Stay calm and work hard, success is all yours.
